SPUC Blog

John Smeaton is the director of Britain's SPUC (Society for the Protection of Unborn Children) He has a blog and comments here on British government double talk. When the government run agencies laudably want to get pregnant mothers to quit smoking the talk is all about 'helping your growing baby'. When the same government talks about abortion they speak of how 'gentle suction is used to remove the pregnancy.'

Duuh. Now a baby is a 'pregnancy'. It's almost as bad as the chilling turn of phrase used in the USA, where the baby is referred to as 'the product of conception.'

John Smeaton's blog contains some excellent stuff (like the post you have commented on) but why does he have to be so relentless negative?
Also, why does he not allow people to leave their own comments. Tends to defeat the whole purpose of a blog!

John is clearly very knowledgable but you might know from your time in England about the damage he has done to SPUC during his tenure. I used to support SPUC but ceased to do so when I discovered that, as the main pro-life parliamentary lobbying group in the UK, they have no relationship whatsoever with the principal pro-life parliamentarians in the UK Parliament. They are not even on speaking terms with Ann Widdecombe and David Alton. What's going on? John and his colleagues at SPUC don't have to like these politicians but surely they have a duty to work with them to further such an important cause?

Root and branch reform of the UK pro-life movement is long overdue. We've had forty years of back-biting and in-fighting between the various groups. Money is wasted and lives are lost. The people who were around at the beginning - Phyllis Bowman, Jack Scarisbrick and John Smeaton (all of whom are, no doubt, very well intentioned) - are, I believe, still heavily involved in the UK pro-life scene. No wonder it has become stale and largely introspective. There's a whole generation of UK pro-life leaders that must have been lost to the cause because of the unwillingness of certain people to move on. What a great shame (to say the least).

Please excuse the length of this comment. I've been meaning to write such a comment for some time and your post spurred me into action!

Thanks for an excellent, inspiring blog. My wife and I feel enriched by it.

How many euphemisms does the abortion business need for 'baby'?
The final tally isn't in yet.

Yes, that term "the products of conception" often used when an incomplete abortion has resulted in bleeding or infection and an ultrasound is used to visualize the "remaining products of conception" and to remove them from the formerly gravid uterus. It is horrible the sorts of euphemisms generated to serve the propaganda of the liberal new world - after all the products of conception are just another euphemism for the euphemism of "choice".
