I've always enjoyed acting, and I've always wanted to write a play or a screenplay, so maybe The Vicar, Todd Unctuous, Mantilla the Hon and Caitlin O'Rourke are just the actor in me coming out.
I think there are a few people out there who read the blog who actually remember me from college days. I did a lot of acting back then, and I always enjoyed directing plays.
It's an outlet. I have fun writing them. I hope you enjoy them. They are an entertaining way to make a sometimes serious point.
Just so you all remember, they're pretend. You mustn't even imagine that everything they say are what I believe or think.
The scary thing it that I keep thinking of more. What about Mrs Brady the Scary Old Lady or Father Randy the Trendy Priest? Maybe I should start a new blog totally dedicated to alter egos.
One reader has commented that she (or he) like Caitlin O'Rourke the best and Mantilla the Hon next best. What do you think?

I like all your alter egos, but especially the Vicar and Todd. I don't know how you do it!
I love your characters, too, but I think you really have a secret source. I just hope the parishoners don't recognize themselves! Thanks, Fr D. Maybe you are a Catholic Will Rogers? ok, Bill Mahr, no forget that. AnneG in NC
I'd love to hear more from Mantilla the Hon; she's my favorite. And I think Father Randy the Trendy Priest would be a real hoot!
Caitlin is my favorite, and Todd is so well done that I can't stand to read what he says. If you do give them their own blog, you could call it "Altar Egos".
I like Caitlin--and the Vicar!
A little near the bone, but very funny.
Mantilla...def. my fave. if i think about her too much i start talking like her. (in my head of course)
I like the Vicar and Todd best, but (not to be an enabler) Father Randy sounds intriguing too! hehe :)
I love these characters, it's a really fun and unique element of this blog!
I like them all! If I had to pick 2 it would be the Vicar and Todd Unctious. But if you have others...please share!
Caitlin is my favorite with Todd and Vicar tied for second. They are all great fun to read!
I like them all. Todd makes me laugh. Sometimes I just want to slap him. Caitlin reminds me of my daughter with her ramblings, but I guarantee she'd probably get just one play date at my house before she gets herself on the banned list. She seems to have a mean streak in her. Mantilla is too funny. How could anyone not like her? The Vicar is great, too. Keep 'em coming, Father.
I like Caitlin a lot, and (as a former Anglican) the Vicar; alas, Todd and Mantilla leave me cold.
I like them all, but I think that with the last post, Caitlin beat out Mantilla for my favorite.
I would read any alter ego you came up with whether they are here or somewhere else.
Please bring on Randy, sounds like a "fabo" idea, totally in the spirit if Vat 2 ;>), by the way a separate area of your blog devoted to Altar Egos sound great, save em for a book
The Vicar is great! I love Mantilla the Hun the most.... her rant on cassock albs is an all time fav.
The Vicar wins my vote, hands down! Mantilla is a strong second, though.
Thanks!
No, definitely the Vicar and Todd - but I like the idea of Fr. Randy the trendy priest - remember "Not the Nine O'Clock News" - they had the trendy Anglican Vicar - "the devil - is he all bad?"
Mantilla is my favorite, like Cordelia (whom I know to be a lot like Mantilla). I think more alter egos sounds great, as long as you don't end up with Fr. Trendy the randy priest. :P
I think Mantilla is actually a member of the Altar Guild here at the parish.
She came into the sacristy the other day and took all the clean purificators home with her because, in her words, "Those other ladies, they don' iron them really nice, you know what I mean, Father? Don' they know these are like the burial clothes of Jesus? I mean, if they're going to do the linens, they should do them right, you know what I mean?"
Mantilla is sweet and a wonderful help around the sacristy, but she tends to discourage other volunteers.
I like all of the alter egos but Mantilla and Caitlin are my favourites.
As long as you're sure it's not multiple personality syndrome....
Seriously creative fun
I just met Caitlin. You go, girl!
Favorites are Todd and the Vicar. In all three, you need compliments on photo choices as much as prose. Soooo perfect.
Every time I see sneakers under a flour-sack alb, I think of what Mantilla would say.
Seriously. I would probably stop reading if you got rid of her. Ok, maybe not. But I loves me some Mantilla.
My friend, laurazim, and I DO SPEAK like her everytime one of her posts come out. I can't help it. She makes a good point AND she's funny.
I wish dare were more peeps like her at some o da parishes aroun' here. I might not have ta drive ova a hour for ta see some decently respectable vestaments, you know wha I'm sayin'?
I also like the other alter egos. It took me a while to warm up to the Vicar. Todd cracks me up.
Mantilla needs more screen time.
And I'd love to see Randy!!
Hands down, Todd and the Vicar.
Suggestiion for a new blogger:
Dexter Standing and Suzie, the cool, traddy lay couple.
Perhaps a good outlet for you, but for me, a waste of time.
I am curious if there is any way to count those, like myself, who have read one of your "alter ego" blog entries and were taken in? Humble pie tends to aggravate my GERD.
My favorite is Todd, because reading him helps me to not take the mainstream media too seriously.
Wow! Fr. Randy sounds like a great idea. In fact we have our own Fr. Randy that sometimes fills in at my parish for our priests when they are out of town. I like to call him Fr. LAME (Look At Me, Everyone). Some of his signature moves are to play the guitar and singing popular folk songs as part of his homily, making such liberal interpretations of the Bible that require a far greater leap of faith than what is really meant, and making excuses for liberal, pro-abort politicians. Have fun writing! I can't wait to read Fr. Randy's first post!
I absolutely love the idea of a second blog. And that suggestion to call it "Altar Ego"? Genius. Clearly, Leslie rocks that one.
Mantilla is my run-away favorite. She got all kinds of class, you know what I mean? The others are all in such close running that I don't think I could call any of them second place. I'll tell you, I would love for the Vicar's wife to snoop a little and stick her opinion in there once in a while. (Something like Hyacinth Bucket would do....No, this is NOT the Chinese take-away!)
Yes, yes, yes with the Fr. Randy. I'm so intrigued by that notion--I just can't wait to read him! (He probably watches Todd's news broadcasts, and is annoyed by Mantilla.)
"So many grew round me, through me,
from my self, as it were.
I became a channel, unleashing a force
called man.
Did not the others crowding in, distort
the man that I am?
Being each of them, always imperfect,
myself to myself too near,
he who survives in me, can he ever
look at himself without fear?"
Who wrote that then? Ten points to whoever guesses. Sorry for starting a competition in your comment box Father.P.S.Please pray for me.
Fr., I'm the reader whose comment instigated this post. After thinking it over, I realize that I like Caitlin and Mantilla because they are smart. The Vicar and Todd, not so much. How about creating a smart funny male alter ego?
Also, I like them on this blog. It breaks up the seriousness with a little humorous seriousness, if ya see what I mean...
Shadowlands, wasn't it our late great Holy Father, Pope John Paul II?
Fr Phillips, correct. You win.I tell you what though Father P,as it's the year of the Priest,I am going to say a decade of the Rosary for you instead of giving you ten points.God bless.
I like Todd the best -- it's just too real!!!
