Manly Rosary

I'm delighted with the new rosary I've got. Fed up with brightly colored, rose scented little lightweight girly rosaries that break, my friend Judy Bruce offered to make me a 'manly rosary'.

It is hand made with large, sensible black beads, a strong wire chain, and a strong and beautiful St Benedict crucifix. It feels heavy in the hand, and is a pleasure to use.

If you would like one of these hand made manly crucifixes for yourself or a man in your life I can get you one for just $50.00. It comes in it's own simple black pouch.

Send me an email: frlongenecker@att.net and I'll get Judy to make one for you.

  1. I'm a woman, and I love manly rosaries. The girly ones are nice looking, but they ALWAYS break! I've got a wood and string rosary, it's my go-to, and I can carry it in my pocket all day without worrying about breakage.

  2. Very nicely crafted. Should serve you well.

  3. Would "TheArtofManliness.com" post an article (perhaps written by Fr.Longenecker) on "The Art of Praying the Manly Rosary"?
If your silver chain turns gold/copper, will it still "look" manly?

  4. I prefer a cord rosary for my manly rosary. Metal links are way to bulky in the pocket of work pants and can scratch up other objects like cell phones (and I can't be bothered with a case). There are a number of olive wood cord rosaries out there but I have yet to find a nice onyx bead/st benedict/st joseph man's rosary on cord. There are a variety of youtube videos on how to make cord rosaries. If your Judy Bruce decided to manufacture some cord-based black men's rosary, particularly of a st joseph variety, she would likely find a customer in me.

    Very nice.

I currently just use a gray plastic one.

BUT IT GLOWS IN THE DARK (it was a nice surprise)! Does yours glow in the dark, eh? Didn't think so.

  6. If they glow in the dark, I guess then there is no excuse for not saying the Rosary late at night.

What a joy it is to be a Roman Catholic!

  7. Another way to obtain a manly man rosary (and support a great Catholic organization to boot) is to join the Knights of Columbus. Every new knight is presented with a rosary when he joins and encouraged to pray it every day. My favorite rosary is one with black boxwood beads and a heavier crucifix that I got through the K of C promotional and gift department.

  8. I understand that St. Maximilian Kolbe once referred to the rosary as "Our Lady's Machine Gun." That's about as manly as it gets. :)

  9. Machine guns = manly? Ugh. Not the kind of message I want to send to my Christian son.

    Prayer = manly? Yes. Definitely.

Prayer = quintessentially human? Beyond fourth-grade definitions of sex stereotypes? Yes, definitely.

  10. I was fortunate enough to come across a "manly" rosary - and commercially avaialble (I bought mine at the Central Catholic Bookshop, Melbourne, Australia http://www.catholicbookshop.com.au/Rosaries/Rosaries?Page=6&Items=12 ) - with beads made of haematite, a mineral containing iron oxide. The beads are a gun-metal steel-grey colour, which took my fancy being an ex-soldier and current police officer, the rosary also has a nice heft to it. Roman soldiers associated it with Mars, their god of war, again given my previous profession making it appealing to me.

  11. My better half gave me a rosary with the beads made of olive wood from the Holy Land. Might your friend be up for making a St. Michael Chaplet?
