Anneg, I suspect that they are getting ready to celebrate the feast-day of St Nicholas of Myra. Myra, as you know, was in Asia Minor and today would be part of Turkey - hence the turkuoise vestments!
At the risk of being chastised for having no sense of humor, I have to say--I find myself inclined to ask questions such as these about the Anglicans pictured:
Do they love God? Do they do their best to serve their neighbor? Do they define neighbor the way Christ would have us define neighbor? If they do, I imagine they are "nice Anglicans" indeed.
This blog is an interesting place, and there is indeed some thoughtful discussion here, but sometimes I think I've surfed my way to a silly fashion critique that seems more like Bravo than any form of Christianity that involved a stable and crucifixion hill. Yes, good fun is a nice way to pass the day. But why don't you go make fun of your own vestments, Father. Get people to laugh at your hat, maybe. And realize that the "nice Anglicans" might just be doing a better job of being Christians than their smartly dressed counterparts who are RC clergy. You never know.
Steve, you don't seem to get it. The only reason I wear the hat is because it's ridiculous.
I wouldn't mind the Anglicans dressing as they do if they knew they were clowns, but what I find most funny is that they dress as clowns and are serious about it.
Father, for the record, I did get the point: You were treating Anglican clergy like they were "clowns" -- or, to be more precise, you claim that they were dressed like clowns. Your comment reminds me of how often Jesus spent his time and energy ridiculing the way people dressed.
If you have a second, take a glance at the photo I'm linking to here; it's the photo that Rocco currently has in the top post on his "Whispers" blog. I'm sure some would see the pontiff's attire as clownish, but surely you do not.
Or maybe there are just so many more important things to care about in this world than what colors one's vestments are. So many other things that have a great deal more to do with Christian charity, love, and respect.
As a matter of fact, one of Jesus' most telling sarcastic remarks was about the long robes the Pharisees wore--however, he didn't mind the long robes so much, but their hypocritical pompous attitude.
You're right though...you're being way to serious about it.
I believe we'd had enough with the kitten and puppy. Please go back to being a lovable curmudgeon.
ReplyDeleteSurely you recognise that 'nice Anglicans' is a tautology?
ReplyDeletePlease, no more, lest I require an injection of insulin!
ReplyDeletePlease, Fr, don't be "nice" anymore. I can't take it.
ReplyDeleteMaybe Vic can tell us what liturgical season turquoise, or is it aqua on the bishopess KJS is?
there's a place for cute and cuddly- I'll just google 'inspirational...blah blah' if I need some- but we come here for your strong, true opinions.
ReplyDeleteI must say- I must be a pessimist at heart- seeing the tacky teddy bear- I thought "made in China'

ReplyDeleteHere's a 'nice' piece by Michael Voris on the subject...

Doesn't the lady bishop the extreme left have a beard??
ReplyDeleteImitation is, after all, the sincerest form of flattery...
ReplyDeleteI defy anyone to write a convincing parody of The Episcopal Church. They are their own living send-up.
ReplyDeleteNice Anglicans: more like an oxymoron
ReplyDeleteWhy does da-glo mitre atop the lady "bishop" on the right appear to be see-through?
ReplyDeleteWhat are you trying to do to us????
ReplyDeleteYes, actually, Father. I believe I really have had enough. We -- all of us -- have had enough. And then some, thank you.
ReplyDeleteLike a Riesling with a tablespoon of sugar.
Father,
ReplyDeleteWhat's wrong with people - both men and women - wearing hilarious costumes, satisfied with their relevance to contemporary culture? What, I ask thee?!
What's right about it?

So you think this picture is 'serious'?

Try to find where you left your funny bone
The Anglicans used to have better taste in vestments than the pretend bishop on the right.
