When I saw this post and this picture of this beautiful church, I was reminded of something I had read yesterday in the Sept. issue of The Adoremus Bulletin. In a discussion of a liturgical conference at Fota, Ireland, the author wrote that Father Uwe Michael Lang "observed that Pope Benedict is acutely aware that the contemporary crisis in art is a symptom of modernity's crisis of identity: modernity denies the transcendental nature of beauty, the identity of beauty with truth and goodness. This 'new iconoclasm' has profoundly affected the art and architecture in churches today."
My only issue would be, while I might expect this 'crisis' in society as a whole, and in any artist in particular..I guess I expect more of the bishops that make these decisions in the construction of these 'modern' churches.
For a moment I thought this was a picture of the church at the Holy Spirit Shrine in Conyers, GA. It looks so much like it except for the lack of stalls in the center of the aisle.
"I wish to create a church so modern that it would move even the hardest heart to ask, 'Is it finished yet?'"
