Chust for Nice

The Church of San Clemente in Rome

  1. I had the privilege of praying and celebrating Mass in the Basilica of San Clemente for 2 1/2 years, while I was working in Rome in the early '90s and was a guest of the Irish Dominican Province, who have had custody of San Clemente since 1676.

To celebrate the Easter Vigil on that spot, where Christians have been gathering in prayer since post-Apostolic times, is a moving thing indeed.

That's the title church of Cardinal Ad Simonis, emeritus archbishop of Utrecht. He'll turn 80 tomorrow (the 26th). Please remember him in your prayers that day, if you could.

  3. This church appeared in Fr. Barron's documentary on Catholicism. He used the beautiful mosaic of the tree of life on the apse as a way of illustrating the mystical body of Christ, if I remember correctly.
