Cardinal George writes here on the direction our country is going. Among other things he comments on the prevailing tendency by Hilary Clinton and the Obama administration to change the term "freedom of religion" to "freedom of worship."
“Freedom of worship was guaranteed in the Constitution of the former Soviet Union,” Cardinal George said. “You could go to church, if you could find one. The church, however, could do nothing except conduct religious rites in places of worship—no schools, religious publications, health care institutions, organized charity, ministry for justice and the works of mercy that flow naturally from a living faith. All of these were co-opted by the government. We fought a long Cold War to defeat that vision of society.”
By the way, lest any reader berate me for being "political", I guess if it's good enough for Cardinal George to comment on these matters publicly it's okay for me too.
Just has freedom of speech has led to silencing those considered "hateful" in our society so too will freedom of worship lead to to its suppression.
ReplyDeleteThis country is going in a totally wrong direction!
ReplyDeleteI think priests need to become more political, along with the laity...it is our duty as Christians.
On EWTN this morning, Fr. Mitch Pacwa was "incensed" about the way the country is going and he wasn't shy about expressing his opinions and advice, saying, "We must fight!"
Preach on, good Father L., preach on!
ReplyDeleteI'm on my knees for this country - and the world, for that matter.
ReplyDeleteHello, Father.
ReplyDeleteTo start, I believe the Obama administration is trying to trample on our religious rights and think the greatest realistic thing that could happen to America right now is that he is defeated in November. Regarding the use of "freedom of worship", though, I was wondering if you could look at this article if you have time:
http://www.commonwealmagazine.org/blog/?p=17590
If you do not have time, it basically says the terms "freedom of religion" and "freedom of worship" have been used interchangeably starting with FDR and that most government websites (sources and links are provided for each) use "freedom of religion" instead of "freedom of worship". In other words, it believes people are making much ado about nothing regarding the use of "freedom of religion".
Just wondering what you think.
Thanks!
Dennis

ReplyDeleteAs Our Lady of the Rosary predicted at Fatima, "The Holy Father will consecrate Russia to Me (without the Bishops of the world) and a CERTAIN period of peace will be granted to the world."
Please keep speechifying, Father.
ReplyDeleteJust as Jesus kicked out the moneylenders from the temple, we need to keep out the government lawyers and politicians from our churches.
