Double Cheats :They've raised the level of the causeway since my day(early sixties), it used to be a concreted strip at beach level,(Below high water level) and the locals called THAT cheating even then!
But as I remember it hasn't had its builder monks in it since the revolution.
Once you get past the tourist trap shops on the lower levels of the island, the monastery/fortress itself is amazing. Once of my favorite places we visited in France.
